Neurophysiology of the ENS
One research focus of Michael Schemann and his team is enteric neurophysiology. The electrophysiological features of enteric neurons are analysed with innovative neuroimaging methods.
After loading the neurons with a membrane potential sensitive dye, the membrane potential is measured with high speed cameras which directly give information about the activity of the neurons. Spread and spatiotemporal pattern of activation can be evaluated at the same time (PubMed search).
Cells are loaded with a dye that has a calcium-dependent fluorescence.
